The new standard 13888 of October 2009
The Institute’s Documentation Centre has received the new version of the European standard on grouts for ceramic tiles UNE-EN 13888 [October 2009], official version in Spanish of European standard EN 13888 [May 2009]. The main changes in relation to the 2003 version, which it cancels (European version of 2002) are as follows:
- Variations in the bending strength requirements
- Modification of Table 4 on ‘frequency of production control’
- Modification of the ‘classification and name’ (Table 5)
It is the third modification that has surprised us, owing to the risk of confusion with regard to the name from the previous version, which has been widely disseminated in the professional tile installation sector.
We provide a table of the codes and definitions in both versions for interpretation for interested Internet users.
In addition, the old version allowed the test method of transverse deformation (EN 12002) to be applied to cementitious grouts and, in theory, if they passed the test for these to be classified as S1 or S2, since the old version views transverse deformation as a ‘special’ characteristic.
In addition, it was hoped that the new version of the standard would incorporate the CE mark for these materials.
I should like to ask the technicians and sales persons of the adhesives and mortars sector, what reasons have led to this situation of technical undervaluation of these products, and of their discrimination as specialised materials in the construction sector? Is it because they are not good business, because of low consumption?
